STEPS AND GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU THROUGH THE DIFFICULT CONVERSATION OF MOVING AN OLDER ADULT

Making the decision to move your parents or loved ones into a community for older adults takes time and careful consideration.

Out of concern for their safety, a planned family intervention can help set the stage for an open, frank discussion that can guide your loved ones toward a decision that feels right for both them and you.

Perhaps the older adults in your life have resisted leaving home for fear of losing their independence or can’t grasp the extent of their deteriorating condition and its effect on those they love.

A family intervention requires structure and the participation of friends, family members—even co-workers—as a way for the people involved to voice their opinions and have a proper, reasonable discussion on the merits of moving the older adult into a safe and welcoming environment. While each family faces unique challenges, Independence Village has developed some general guidelines to help you come up with a positive solution that works best for all involved.
